PART THREE
POWER TO DO THE DOCTORING
GO GET SUSAN, SEE WHAT SHE CAN DO
Susan uses her power to work on two injured men.
Thereâsâa long time ago,
there one lady down in Omak.
And when she was young,
that time.
Something like that Napoleanâs daughter,
the one that sing.
About her age.
This woman, they call âem Susan.
And they go to dance, you know.
Sometimes they put up a dance herself, you know.
In her house.
But sometimes they go to somewhere else, you know,
to somebodyâs dance.
Like three winter.
They go to a dance.
And sing.
Then, on the third winter,
they sing in the first winter,
they never said nothing.
Then they sing, on the second winter,
for two, three night.
They never said nothing.
But on the third winter,
they sing for three, four days,
three, four night,
and then the dance is finishedâ
all over.
Then he say so.
He says,
âFrom now onââ
And they stop, you know.
Everybody is just quiet
and then they talk there.
Just like thatâ
Wendy: After midnight?
Well, when they finish,
before morningâ
so that wasâ
They finished then.
Wendy: Before breakfast?
Before breakfast.
Yeah, when they just finished.
And they know they were finished.
And in morning, you know.
Towards morning.
That was the end.
No more dance after that.
Then isâeverybodyâs quiet.
They mustâve tell âem,
âIâm going to speak.
And everybody quiet and listen.â
Then he stand there
and he says,
âIâm going to tell you.
You peopleâ
what Iâm going to do from now on.
I sing three winters,
and I never said nothing in two winters.
But this is the third.
This is the end.
Now Iâm tell you what Iâm going to be
from now on.
Iâm going to be Indian doctor.
And Iâm going to go and work on the sick people.
Whoeverâs sick,
the woman or man,
or children,
or any sick person.
I can go over there if they call me.
They got to call me.
Then I can go and work on the sick person
and see what I can do,
whether I get them to get better,
or may not.
Can not tell.
Then, in another way,
if somebody gets hurt,
they got the blood,
they get hurt,
then, whoever they get hurt
then the blood comes inside,
and they raise up
that they come to the heart,
then theyâs dead.
And, before the blood comes to the heart,
and I should suck the blood out.
And then they never reach the heart.
And they will get all right.
They healed up
and then theyâll be all right.
Or, anybody got the broken leg
or hurt somewhere,
maybe no blood in there
but it more like aâ
kind of a yellow stuff, you know.
They seems to squirt in the inside.
Then thatâll come to the heart.
Same as the blood.
But itâs yellow stuff.
Something like that over thereâyellow.
And they can suck that out
to keep âem away from the heart.
And then, once they sucked them out,
or twice,
at the same time,
sucked them out and then stopped
and then after a little while,
maybe a few minutes,
suck some more.
Then they empty, like.
Then, they never go back.
After a while, whoever they were cut, you know,
theyâll heal up
and then theyâs all right.â
So he mentioned that heâs got two ways.
They can work with the sick people
or they can work for who they got hurt, you know.
But some doctors, they can only work with the sick people only.
If somebody got hurt,
they can do nothing for that.
Or somebody got bit with a rattlesnake,
thatâs another one.
Somebodyâs got to do something about it.
